MDOT to hold public forum on Division Street improvements

The Michigan Department of Transportation is looking for public input on what to do with Division Street in Traverse City. The busy street has long been considered dangerous for pedestrians and bicyclists.

It’s often difficult and dangerous to cross Division Street – a major artery that divides residential neighborhoods. The debate over what to do about safety and congestion on the state-managed street has been going on for years.

In 2011, the city hired an outside consultant to draw up plans for a re-vamped Division Street – plans that included controversial roundabout intersections. Two years ago, voters decided to allow the city commission to use up to 30 feet of parkland along the street – to open up options for improvements.

A public open house to go over some of those options will be held Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the government center.
