Lake Michigan's Beaver Island Gets New Birding Trail

beaverislandbirdingtrail.org

A new birding trail will be unveiled at Beaver Island this weekend. The trail encompasses more than 12,000 acres of public land. Lake Michigan's largest island is a critical stopover for migratory birds flying north.

Katie Keen is a wildlife technician with the Department of Natural Resources. She says it’s a driving trail with look-out stops along the way.

"It's a just great location being right out on Lake Michigan, where spring migration just brings all sorts of birds through: sparrows, vireos, warblers. It’s a great place for birding."

She says the island is an ideal spot for bird watchers because of the range of birds.

"They’ll both be becoming through for migration, but there are some birds that will stop there for just a day or two. There are some that’ll stay throughout the summer," she says. "So it’s just a great corridor to see not only shore birds and then inland birds."

A dedication will be held tonight. Free events, such as guided tours, speakers and presentations will happen all weekend. For information is available at beaverislandbirdingtrail.org.
