Detour Lighthouse Group Recognized By First Lady

<p><em><a href="mailto:payettepc@interlochen.org">By Peter Payette</a></em></p> <p>An historic preservation group in the eastern Upper Peninsula has been has been recognized by First Lady Michelle Obama.</p> <p>The Detour Reef Light Preservation Society is one of 30 groups to ever receive the Preserve America Stewards award. The all-volunteer group restored the lighthouse that is one mile offshore between the eastern end of the Upper Peninsula and Drummond Island. It sits on a reef in De Tour passage.</p> <p>This is the only offshore lighthouse in the United States that allows visitors to stay overnight in the keepers quarters. It was reopened in 2006.</p>
