Classical new release: 'Charles Gounod: Piano Works'

2018 is the bicentennial of the birth of the French composer Charles Gounod. Best known for his operas such as "Faust" and "Roméo et Juliette," Gounod also composed masses, symphonies and piano pieces. A new album by Roberto Prosseda celebrates Gounod's works for piano, including some that have never been recorded before.

The most famous of Gounod's piano works is his "Ave Maria," a meditation based on a prelude by Johann Sebastian Bach. This album also features world premiere recordings of several lesser known piano pieces by Gounod. These premieres include an impromptu and a nocturne as well as a sonata for piano, four hands. The additional hands for this sonata are provided by pianist Enrico Pompili.
