Detroit Public Theatre inaugural season begins Friday

An interview with Courtney Burkett and Sarah Winkler.

"Fearless. Fresh. Made in Detroit.”

That's the motto of the Detroit PublicTheatre,whose mission is to producetheater with top writers, directors, and actors in Midtown Detroit's growing cultural district.

The Detroit PublicTheatre'sinaugural season begins Friday at the Max M. Fisher Music Center, home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Stateside's Cynthia Canty spoke with Courtney Burkett and Sarah Winkler, founding co-artistic directors. 

"People are paying attention to Detroit in a way that they haven't in a really long time, particularly our arts scene and our artists. So, we want to make sure that theater is a part of that conversation. Right now Michigan is a great exporter of our own talent and the Detroit Public Theatre really hopes to maintain and give people opportunities to work in this community and to bring that talent to the public here,"Burkett said.

In the interview, Winkler and Burkett also talk about how they ended up finding a home at the Max M. Fisher Music Center.

The play American Hero by Bess Wohl opens the season for the Detroit Public Theatre. The show runs Oct. 30 - Nov. 22.
