Kids Commuters, IPR needs your help.
When Kids Commute host Kate Botello left IPR, we knew there was only one person who could possibly be the host of the show.
You!
While we look for a new permanent host, we invite you to host Kids Commute by choosing classical music for our daily show and introducing it for our listeners.
Each weekday at 7:40 a.m. and 3:20 p.m., we'll share one person's introduction and piece of classical music on the air.
We welcome participation from preschoolers through high school students.
Ready? The instructions are below, along with a demonstration from our friend Hazel.
How it works
Record a voice memo and email it to kidscommute@interlochen.org, or use the “Talk to Us” feature in the IPR mobile app to record and send your introduction.
In your email, please write or spell out your name and the name of the piece - we want to make sure we get it right!
Choose a piece of classical music (music for orchestra, band, choir, piano, string quartet, and so on, or music from a movie or a game) that you love. Record an introduction for the piece using the following format:
- Hi, I’m (name - first name only, or first and last - whatever you’re comfortable with).
- I’m in (grade) at (school name or homeschool).
- [If applicable: I play the (instrument) / I play the (instrument) in (band or orchestra) / I sing in choir]
- One of my favorite pieces is / One piece I really like is (title, with composer name if you know it and know how to say it).
- I like it because (1-2 sentences - Is there a sound you like? Is it music you played or sang before? Tell us why you like it, and “it’s really pretty” or “it’s really exciting” are fine answers!
Samples (or listen to Hazel's demo above)
I’m Jane Smith. I’m in eighth grade at Traverse City West Middle School. I play the clarinet in band. One of my favorite pieces is Chester. We played this in band last year, and I really liked how everybody got to play the melody at different times.
I’m John Smith. I’m in eleventh grade and I’m homeschooled. I really love the Cowboys music by John Williams. I learned about it on an episode of Kids Commute last year, and it’s one of my favorites now.
I’m Pat, and I’m a senior at Interlochen Arts Academy. I play the bassoon in the orchestra. I love Mozart’s bassoon concerto. I learned to play it a couple of years ago, and it’s one of my favorites to play and listen to, especially the third movement.
