The Fretful Porcupine performs tonight in Elk Rapids, and the duo's music is as unusual as their name. They perform tonight in Elk Rapids at the Seed Studio Gallery at 8:00.

The sounds of a violin and saxophone: it's not the kind of instrumentation you'd expect from a pair of professional  musicians. But Violinist Jake Armerding says, that's just the point.

"I love, in a sense, kind of spreading the Gospel of this idea of an inappropriate instrument sounding great," he says.

That changed when DSO management accepted the outlines of a proposal pushed by Jennifer Granholm and Senator Carl Levin.

Writers Series Announces Lineup

Organizers of the National Writers Series have announced some of the authors coming to Traverse City this year.

Kicking-off the 2011 series, two writers from the television series "Mad Men" will share stories about writing for the small screen.

The series continues with Sarah Brokaw, Paula McLain, Roy Blount, Jr., and an evening highlighting Michigan authors including Michael Delp and Bonnie Jo Campbell.

Later this fall, satirist David Sedaris will come to town, and there will be a thrillers and crime-writers event.

Switchback is made up of Brian FitzGerald and Martin McCormack who play a combination of Celtic and American folk music. The concert will also feature singer Stephanie O'Dell. Proceeds benefit the Old Town Hall. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. </p>
