Traverse City Founder To Get Bronzed, Placed In Hannah Park

The father of Traverse City, Perry Hannah, is going to be cast in metal. A statue of the historical figure and a new plaza will be located at the entrance to Hannah Park at the corner of 6th and Union.  The location was approved unanimously Thursday night by the Parks and Recreation Commission.

The idea for the statue was city planner Russ Soyring’s. He thinks Hannah should be recognized for his contributions to the city.

“This could draw attention to a very important historical figure in our community but also really create a grand and elegant entrance to the Hannah Park,” said Soyring.

There are several design concepts, created by landscape architect Anita Silverman. They include a contemporary style and a Victorian-era one, according to Soyring: “We’re looking at doing something that would reflect the type of park design that maybe Perry Hannah would have done in the Victorian days of Traverse City.”

The Victorian design could include stone that matches Hannah’s home and historical lighting. Both designs include seating. The commission was split between the contemporary and historical design options at the meeting.

The project will be funded by proceeds from the book, Perry Hannah’s Gifts – Then and Now, written by Peg Jonkhoff and Fred Hoisington. Both authors wanted to use the funds, like the book, for educational purposes.

The statue is already in the process of being made by sculptor Verna Bartnick, who created the “Time To Let Go” art piece along the TART trail in Clinch Park.

The next steps for the project are to finalize the design concept and get approval from the city commission.
