Stupak To Retire

http://ipraudio.interlochen.org/Stupak_Decision.MP3

By Bob Allen

Longtime Democratic Congressman Bart Stupak is not going to run for re-election. He made his formal announcement at a 12:30p.m. press conference in Marquette.

Stupak has been in the center of political firestorm over passage of the health care bill because of his stance on abortion.

Veteran political columnist George Weeks says the Congressman told him the news last night.

"He said I just feel burned out. And the first thing I asked was, well, you were considering running for governor, now might you do it? And he said no, I'm not running for governor," Weeks says.

He says Stupak downplayed the recent threats to him, including death threats for his health care vote. But Weeks says the calls to their home at all hours was tough on Stupak's wife and prompted the family to disconnect their home phone.

For Bob Allen's discussion with George Weeks today, some reaction from the district, and audio from the news conference in Marquette, listen to the audio posted above.
