If you were in Traverse City at all last week for the Film Festival, you might have noticed a pair of street performers with an unusual instrumentation. Erin Kost and Chris Puente were out on Front Street to earn a little gas money for the trek from Texas to Empire.
The duo, Puente, performs at the Dunegrass Festival this weekend - using vocals, guitar and musical saw.
"Her first saw wasn't a musical saw, it was a handsaw," Chris says. "She played that for about six months!"
"No, it was a rusty handsaw," Erin responds.
IPR's Linda Stephan had to find out a little more about what it's like to perform music on an everyday hand tool. Listen to the audio for more about Puente and the old-tyme sounds of the musical saw.
