Northern Michigan’s next congressman says his focus is to ‘get the economy growing’

Ben Thorp

Republican Jack Bergman, who won Michigan’s 1st Congressional District by taking 55 percent of the vote yesterday, says his number one legislative priority is revving up the economy.

He spoke with IPR News Radio’s David Cassleman on Wednesday morning. Listen to the conversation below.

Bergman says the economy has not grown at an acceptable rate for the past eight years.

“You need an economic engine that grows about 3 to 3.5 percent minimum to actually create the jobs necessary for the economy,” Bergman said.

Bergman spoke during his campaign about repealing the Affordable Care Act and easing federal environmental regulations.

“We here know how to live better than anybody in Washington, D.C. can tell us how to live,” Bergman says.
