A new name for the former Mormon Tabernacle Choir

thetabernaclechoir.org

In October 2018, the ensemble formerly known as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir officially changed its name to The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square

The 360-member Choir has been known as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir since the late 1920s, when it began broadcasting a weekly national radio program. All of the members are volunteers.

According to an official statement issued by The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, the name change is meant to align the choir more closely with its sponsoring organization, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It also reflects the fact that the choir makes its home in the Tabernacle on Temple Square in Salt Lake City.

The Choir's previous recordings and other publications will continue to use the name "Mormon Tabernacle Choir." All subsequent releases will use The Choir's new name.

Dr. Amanda Sewell is IPR's music director.
