New Interlochen Public Radio Leadership Planned

INTERLOCHEN, Mich. – July 29, 2014: Interlochen Center for the Arts (ICA) and its broadcasting subsidiary, Interlochen Public Radio (IPR), have initiatedinstitution-wide strategies to build and engage new generations of public media users and listeners.

“Our vision is a comprehensive media experience that takes public radio and transforms it to public media; IPR has given us a strong foundation on which to build that vision,” said Interlochen’s President Jeffrey Kimpton.  “Our commitment to quality regional public radio is stronger than ever, as seen in our recent expansions.  This move allows us to integrate IPR’s strengths with Interlochen’s position on the national stage as a potent force in the arts and to share our content more broadly.”

Interlochen has made major program changes to connect audiences to the experience of its vital arts programming.  Updated websites feature online streaming of live programs and webcasts, downloadable music playlists, expanded news stories that include video and photography, online education, interviews with world-renowned Interlochen alumni and guests, and other special presentations.

“As we’ve discussed the demands of 21st century

Interlochen Center for the Arts President Jeffrey Kimpton.

communications, Thom Paulson, our long-standing general manager, has expressed it is time to step aside to make room for a new generation of leadership,” said Kimpton. “As Thom and I discussed the future of IPR, I asked him what he enjoyed doing the most.  He answered, ‘bringing great classical music to our listeners.’  I’ve asked Thom to stay at the station doing just that: leading music programming, hosting on-air and overseeing special projects.”

Paulson came to IPR in the summer of 1976.  For nearly four decades he worked to create an award-winning public radio network with seven stations and two dedicated services.  “We are grateful for the many ways Thom has been a committed champion for IPR,” said Kimpton.

A search for the new General Manager of Interlochen Public Media has begun with the goal of having new leadership in place by January of 2015. Paulson will remain as General Manager during the search and assist in a smooth transition to new leadership.

“IPR is a voice for the arts across the nation and the world,” continued Kimpton. “Having both the ability and the scale to navigate in the evolving digital world is critical to IPR and Interlochen as a whole and its ability to thrive long into the future.”
