Airlines canceled nearly half of all flights in and out of Traverse City on Friday. That's after a fire broke out in an air traffic control center near Chicago.
Delays and cancelations could continue through Saturday morning, according to airport officials.
“Air traffic was restricted ... and almost brought to a halt," Kevin Klein says. He's the director of Cherry Capital Airport.
"So we had several cancelations of this morning’s flights with United and American that both operate to Chicago.”
Klein says airlines are still recovering from the delays and cancelations.
“I would hope that as things come back to normal that by [Saturday] afternoon they’re back to 100 percent operation.”
United and American Airlines flights were both affected.
